When the Job is Tough Oil and Gas Companies Use MECO Vapor Compression
MECO offers a broad array of technologies for producing freshwater in harsh marine environments. Although membrane and waste heat technologies are often employed, when the application is particularly difficult, vapor compression is the technology of choice. MECO has seen a recent surge in demand for VC watermakers for a wide arrange of applications.
A drilling company in Abu Dhabi constructed four new camps for the exploration and development of oil and gas fields deep in the desert. Freshwater for the camps must be produced from highly saline and hard well waters. VC was deemed to be the process of choice and MECO answered the call with a multiple of eight units rated at 10,000 GPD each.
An Indonesian drilling company, operating in the shallow swamps of East Kalimantan, had to deal with a feedwater supply that was high in turbidity and organics. As such, a membrane process was less desirable and two MECO VC unites were used to process the swamp water to pure distilled drinking water.
Two rigs for an Indian drilling contractor went under refurbishment for operation in India's offshore oil and natural gas fields. Rig management decided MECO VC offered the best overall value and reliability. Each rig is fitted with two units.
The waters offshore Khafji between Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are up to 55% more saline than typical ocean waters. The choice was two MECO units, each with a capacity of 7,200 gallons per day.
Another 14,400 gallons per day unit is headed to the Offshore Khuff Gas Development site off Abu Dhabi to join a similar unit, which has been operating on the site for several years.
This level of vapor compression activity demonstrates that each type of watermaker has its place, and MECO has them all to offer.
